The European Union is launching a new pre-travel authorization called ETIAS — expected in late 2026. Every Canadian travelling to Europe will need one before boarding their flight. It is not a visa, it costs €7, and it takes about 10 minutes. Here is everything you need to know before it launches.
ETIAS is NOT yet required. The EU has confirmed a Q4 2026 launch target but no exact date has been announced. You do not need to do anything right now — but you should know what is coming. Aunt Tia will update this page the moment an official launch date is confirmed.

ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorisation System. It is a pre-travel security screening system being introduced by the European Union for visitors from countries that currently enter Europe visa-free — including Canada, the United States, the UK, Australia and many others.
Think of it as Europe's version of what Canada already does with the eTA system, or what the US does with ESTA. You apply online before your trip, pay a small fee, and receive an electronic authorization linked to your passport.
An ETIAS is NOT a visa. You do not need to attend an appointment, submit biometric data, or wait weeks. It is a digital background check that most applicants will have approved within minutes.
ETIAS covers the Schengen Area — 27 European countries that share open borders. If you are flying to any of these countries from Canada, you will eventually need an ETIAS:
🇬🇧 The UK is NOT covered by ETIAS. The UK has its own separate ETA system (already required since February 2026). If your trip includes both the UK and Europe, you will need both a UK ETA and an EU ETIAS. Read the UK ETA guide →
🇮🇪 Ireland is NOT covered by ETIAS. Ireland is in the EU but not the Schengen Area. No ETA or ETIAS is currently required for Canadians visiting Ireland.

If your Europe trip combines the UK and Schengen countries — say, London then Paris — you will eventually need both. The UK ETA is required now. ETIAS is not yet required.

Yes. One ETIAS covers the entire Schengen Area for 3 years. You can visit France, Germany, Italy, Spain and 23 other Schengen countries on a single ETIAS without reapplying.
In most cases yes, you will need an ETIAS even for transit through Schengen airports. Some exceptions may apply — check the official ETIAS site for your specific situation when it launches.
