⚠️ Heads Up — New Europe Requirements for Canadians
UK ETA — Already in effect: Since February 2026, all Canadians visiting the UK must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before flying. It costs £10, takes minutes online, and is valid for 2 years. Children need their own ETA.
EU ETIAS — Coming Q4 2026: The European Union's new pre-travel authorization for Canadians is expected to launch in late 2026. Not yet required — but watch for the official launch date.
EU Entry/Exit System (EES) — Now in effect: Since October 2025, European border crossings now scan biometrics (photo + fingerprints) on your first entry. Replaces passport stamping. Expect slightly longer border queues on first entry.

Get travel health insurance — this is non-negotiable in the US. Register with Registration of Canadians Abroad. Bring proof of onward travel if asked.

🔵 ETIAS Update — Coming Q4 2026
The EU's new pre-travel authorization (ETIAS) is expected to launch in late 2026. It costs €7, takes 10 minutes online, and is valid for 3 years. Not yet required — watch the official EU site for the launch date.
The UK ETA is separate from ETIAS and already required. If your trip combines UK + Europe, you need both.

United Kingdom & Ireland
Direct flights from YYC to London and Dublin. NOT in the Schengen Area — separate rules apply.

All Canadians must obtain a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before flying to the United Kingdom. This includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Passport valid? Most countries require 3–6 months validity beyond your travel dates. Check before booking.
Travel insurance purchased? This is non-negotiable. Medical evacuation from Japan or Thailand can cost $100,000+. A good policy costs $50–$150.
Pre-travel authorizations applied for? UK ETA for London. ETIAS for Europe when it launches (Q4 2026). Check each destination's requirements.
Registered with the Canadian government? Registration of Canadians Abroad is free and lets Ottawa reach you in an emergency.
Medications checked? Some common Canadian medications are restricted or illegal in certain countries (especially Japan, UAE). Check before packing.
Copies of documents? Email yourself scanned copies of your passport, insurance, and tickets. Store in the cloud and leave copies with someone at home.
Credit card travel notifications set? Tell your bank you're travelling or your card may be blocked at the worst possible moment.
Local currency or card sorted? Some destinations are cash-heavy. Know before you land at midnight with no local currency.
