⚠️ Heads Up — New Europe Requirements for Canadians
UK ETA — Already in effect: Since February 2026, all Canadians visiting the UK must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before flying. It now costs £20 (risen from £10 at launch), takes minutes online, and is valid for 2 years. Children need their own ETA.
EU ETIAS — No confirmed launch date: The EU actually withdrew its "Q4 2026" target in July 2026 — no official launch date currently exists, with 2027 now considered most likely. Not required yet. The fee is expected to be €20 (not the earlier-announced €7) once it does launch.
EU Entry/Exit System (EES) — Now in effect: Since October 2025, European border crossings now scan biometrics (photo + fingerprints) on your first entry. Replaces passport stamping. Expect slightly longer border queues on first entry.

Declare all food, plants, and goods over $800 USD. US border officers can ask about purpose and duration of stay.
Before You Go
Get travel health insurance — this is non-negotiable in the US. Register with Registration of Canadians Abroad. Bring proof of onward travel if asked. US border officers can search electronic devices without a warrant — be aware before crossing.
Europe — Schengen Area
Direct flights from YEG and YYC to Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, Rome, Barcelona, Lisbon and Reykjavik.
🔵 ETIAS Update — No Confirmed Date
The EU's new pre-travel authorization (ETIAS) no longer has a confirmed launch date — the EU withdrew its "Q4 2026" target in July 2026, with 2027 now considered most likely. It will cost €20 (revised up from the earlier €7 estimate), takes about 10 minutes online, and will be valid for 3 years once live. Not required yet.
The UK ETA is separate from ETIAS and already required. If your trip combines UK + Europe, you need both.

Book Northern Lights tours and the Blue Lagoon well in advance. Rent a 4x4 if driving the Ring Road. ETIAS has no confirmed date yet (2027 likely).
United Kingdom & Ireland
Direct flights from YYC to London and Dublin. NOT in the Schengen Area — separate rules apply.

All Canadians must obtain a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before flying to the United Kingdom. This includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
- Cost: £20 per person (approximately $34 CAD) — this rose from £10 at launch, then £16, to £20 as of April 2026
- Valid for 2 years or until your passport expires
- Children and infants need their own ETA

Pre-travel authorizations applied for? UK ETA for London (now £20). ETIAS for Europe — no confirmed launch date yet. Check each destination's requirements.
Registered with the Canadian government? Registration of Canadians Abroad is free and lets Ottawa reach you in an emergency.
Medications checked? Some common Canadian medications are restricted or illegal in certain countries (especially Japan, UAE). Check before packing.
Copies of documents? Email yourself scanned copies of your passport, insurance, and tickets. Store in the cloud and leave copies with someone at home.
Credit card travel notifications set? Tell your bank you're travelling or your card may be blocked at the worst possible moment.
